Over 550 acres of rolling Virginia countryside set the majestic backdrop for this historic 18th century stone manor house for which we undertook a substantial addition of nearly 20,000SF.  Working in collaboration with the client, the design is inspired by classic country estates typical of the region, employing a mix of Federalist and Georgian styling.  The home captures the spirit of Southern hospitality with a layout suited to both entertain and relax.  While the front approach is formal and expansive, the massing of the home works with the landscape to create an intimate walled garden at the rear.

The main level of the home is organized by a grand enfilade which links the existing home, entry foyer, formal dining room, library, conservatory and the informal wing of the house in a captivating sequence of spaces.  The architecture works with the landscape to create a series of outdoor rooms which communicate with the interior through elegant glazing and terrace doors.  The sequence of spaces ends in a carriage house-inspired, vaulted great room which is wrapped in outdoor porches.  The centerpiece of this room is a generous, 72 inch tall Rumsford fireplace.
