WARRIOR RESTAURANT PROJECT

The Warrior Restaurant Project redefines what a traditional military mess hall can be, honoring its legacy while embracing modern design to support today’s service members.  The basic premise is simple:  Healthy food supports healthy service members who can better perform their duties.  Creating hospitality like food accommodations on base encourages service members to stay on base, eat healthy and partake in a communal atmosphere.  As part of this proposal, Nahra designed renovations to three existing mess halls at Fort Benning, Fort Drum and Fort Jackson.  Each design concept responds to the unique existing architecture and focus of the base.  Fort Benning, the premier training center for the Army’s Infantry and Armor forces takes on a rugged aesthetic with use of steel, metal meshes and dark woods.  Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division, has the feel of a mountain lodge with exposed timber rafters and a powerful central fireplace.  Fort Jackson, the Army’s largest Initial Entry Training Center, is designed to feel familiar and accessible, with large skylights which bring natural light into the seating areas.
